Piilani Highway will be closed in both directions between Kaonoulu Street and Piikea Avenue from 8 p.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Wednesday to prepare to reopen the second southbound lane in the Kihei Roundabout work zone, the state Department of Transportation announced.
During the full, nighttime closure, drivers will be detoured to South Kihei Road.
After the section of highway reopens at 5 a.m. Wednesday, there will be two lanes open in the southbound direction heading towards Makena and one lane open in the northbound direction heading towards Kahului.
Kulanihakoi Street access from Piilani Highway will be partially opened. Vehicles on southbound Piilani Highway can make the right turn onto Kulanihakoi Street, and vehicles from Kulanihakoi Street can make the right turn onto southbound Piilani Highway.
The left turn from Kulanihakoi Street onto northbound Piilani Highway and the left turn from northbound Piilani Highway onto Kulanihakoi Street will remain closed until the roundabout is completed in January.
The construction speed limit in this active work zone is 25 mph.
The DOT is advising drivers to allow for extra travel time if they plan to pass through the area. Emergency vehicles and first responders will be detoured to South Kihei Road.
All road work is weather permitting.
