I began watching the 2011 version of Hunter X Hunter quite a while after the series had been running. I didn't know what to expect since I never saw the original, 1999 version or read the manga, but I heard a lot of people were really enjoying it so I decided it was about time to give it a try. I have now caught up to the current episode and am thoroughly enjoying it, perhaps one of the best shounen anime in my opinion. I absolutely adore all the characters in it and was very excited to find that some of the cast had figures so I leapt at the chance to add Hisoka to my collection when I saw him available for 5,000 yen at Mandarake!

I tend to become quite attracted to very strange and mysterious characters in anime, and I think Hisoka is one of the strangest characters I've ever come across; he loves a good fight and will get quite turned on at the prospect of battling a strong opponent. On first glance, he seems to be the enemy of the series though as time unravels, his intentions become less clear and I take great enjoyment from seeing how he evolves.

Character Profile:
Name: Hisoka
Age: 28
Height: 187cm
Blood Type: B
Occupation: Hunter

Hisoka’s sculpt has been done to a fairly high standard as there’s plenty of movement in his clothes bringing the figure to life, however a few seam lines are visible upon close inspection which look a little untidy but do not detract the aesthetics of the figure.

The thickness of his blue top seems slightly exaggerated too - almost as if he’s wrapped in cardboard – but it does rest well against his chest and balloons up to match the movement of his whole ensemble. The four card suits are painted on to his top adding to his magician-like outfit. There’s a tiny bit of paint transfer around the shapes but fortunately it’s not particularly noticeable. Hisoka’s trousers look quite solid too, similar to that of the top, but are balanced out by the creases incorporated into the sculpt.

His cuffs and under-vest have been given a shiny finish matching his shoes which are very eye-catching. The paint work on his clothes has been done well adding a nice touch of shading to the figure and works especially well in highlighting his very tempting muscles.

The cards he’s holding are quite disappointing as they’ve been made far too thick and seem more like little notepads for Hisoka to record his next victim. I also find them to be a fraction too small for his huge, manly hands and feel slightly bigger playing cards would be beneficial for the overall look of this figure.

MegaHouse have included two hairstyles and three separate faceplates for Hisoka; each one more menacing than the last. All three expressions capture his ominous yellow eyes and his sinister smile perfectly completing the whole look of the character. A small amount of shading has even been added under his eyebrows darkening his face to fully capture the nature of his character. Hisoka’s two clown-like tattoos are tremendously well painted too and have a nice matt finish to complete the look.

His gelled hairstyle is the most commonly seen in the series and due to the bright colour, it’s a very eye-catching aspect of Hisoka. The waves and kinks have been moulded fairly well if not a tad thick and slightly messy in places in contrast to his straight, untouched hair which all comes to nice sharp points. The colour and shading on both hair parts are very pleasing with nice mixtures of the vivid pink and the darker purple.

The base is a simple translucent, round piece of plastic with ‘Hysoka’ and a stack of cards embossed into it, not much but it seems to tie in well with the figure as a whole.

All in all this figure of Hisoka captures his dark nature beautifully and looks great amongst any collection due to his intense colouring.
